What measures should be taken to repair the damaged passivation film of duplex stainless steel pipes

What measures should be taken to repair the damaged passivation film of duplex stainless steel pipes?

When the passivation film of duplex stainless steel pipe is damaged, the following methods can be used for repair:

Chemical passivation method: Use passivation solution containing components such as nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid to treat the surface of the stainless steel pipe. The specific steps are to first clean the damaged surface to remove oil stains, dust, and other impurities, then apply the passivation solution evenly or immerse it on the surface of the pipe, and control the reaction time and temperature according to the instructions of the passivation solution. The reaction time is generally from a few minutes to several tens of minutes, and the temperature is between room temperature and several tens of degrees Celsius. After the reaction is completed, rinse it with clean water and then dry it with a clean cloth. This method can make the surface of the stainless steel pipe regenerate a dense passivation film, restoring its corrosion resistance.

Electrolytic passivation method: Use the duplex stainless steel pipe as the anode and place it in the electrolyte containing the passivating agent. Apply a certain current for electrolytic treatment. First, prepare a suitable electrolyte, such as solutions containing chromates, phosphates, etc. Then connect the pipe material to the anode of the power supply, and the cathode is usually selected as an insoluble electrode, such as platinum electrode or graphite electrode. After power is applied, control the electrolytic parameters, including current density, electrolysis time and temperature, etc. Usually, the current density is between a few amperes per square decimeter and several tens of amperes per square decimeter, the electrolysis time is from a few minutes to several tens of minutes, and the temperature is maintained at room temperature to around 50℃. After the electrolysis is completed, remove the pipe material, rinse it clean with water and dry it. Electrolytic passivation can form a better and more uniform passivation film on the surface of the pipe material, and the repair effect is relatively ideal.

Mechanical polishing method: For cases where the damage to the passivation film is relatively minor, the mechanical polishing method can be adopted. Use polishing equipment such as a polishing machine, install appropriate polishing wheels, and select polishing abrasive materials with suitable particle sizes, such as alumina, silicon carbide, etc. Fix the stainless steel pipe on the polishing machine, start the equipment, let the polishing wheel come into contact with the surface of the pipe and move slowly, polishing the damaged areas to remove the oxide scale and impurities on the surface, making the surface become smooth again, revealing the fresh metal surface. Then, through natural oxidation or chemical passivation methods, the surface forms a new passivation film. This method can improve the surface finish of the pipe and help enhance the repair effect of the passivation film.

Before conducting the repair of the passivation film, it is necessary to comprehensively consider various factors such as the specific usage environment, damage degree, and repair cost of the duplex stainless steel pipe to select an appropriate repair method. After the repair, the repair effect needs to be tested, for example, by measuring indicators such as the thickness of the passivation film and corrosion resistance to evaluate whether the repair was successful.
