Two development types and applications of duplex stainless steel
Duplex Stainless Steel (DSS) is a type of steel that combines the characteristics of austenitic stainless steel and ferritic stainless steel. It possesses high strength, good toughness, and excellent corrosion resistance, making it widely used in various fields. The development of duplex stainless steel has gone through several generations, including steel types such as SAF2205 and SAF2507, which exhibit outstanding performance in different application environments.
The first generation of duplex stainless steel mainly includes SAF2205. It has superior stress corrosion resistance in neutral chloride solutions and H2S compared to 304L and 306L austenitic stainless steel. SAF2205 contains nitrogen and has good strength and toughness, suitable for cold and hot processing and welding. It is one of the most widely used duplex stainless steels.
The second-generation duplex stainless steel is represented by SAF2507. This is a super duplex stainless steel, suitable for harsh media containing chlorides. The PREN value of SAF2507 is as high as 43. The ferrite and austenite each account for 50%, and it has extremely high performance in resisting stress corrosion cracking, pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion. It was once used in the submarine transportation pipelines in the North Sea.
The main application fields of duplex stainless steel include:
1. Pulp and Paper Industry: Duplex stainless steel is used in bleaching equipment, digester, wood chip storage tanks, etc. Due to its high strength and corrosion resistance, it allows for thinner wall thicknesses and lower costs.
2. Desalination of seawater: During the process of seawater desalination, the high strength and corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steel enable it to perform exceptionally well in high-temperature and high-chloride environments, reducing the need for materials and welding.
3. In the fields of petrochemicals, shipbuilding, and nuclear power: Duplex stainless steel is widely used in oil and gas well pipes in the petrochemical industry, the seawater-contact parts in the shipbuilding industry, and the components with high corrosion resistance requirements in the nuclear power sector.
