How to choose stainless steel welding materials
Austenitic stainless steel has excellent weldability and is currently the most widely used in industry. During welding, no special process measures are generally required.
Let everyone understand the reasons and prevention measures for the occurrence of hot cracks, intergranular corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and weld joint embrittlement (low-temperature embrittlement, σ phase embrittlement, fusion line fracture) in austenitic stainless steel during welding. Through theoretical and practical analysis of welding characteristics, this paper introduces the selection principles and methods for welding rods when welding different materials and under different working environment conditions. Only when the process measures and the selection of welding rods are reasonable can a perfect weld seam be produced.
Welding Characteristics of Austenitic Stainless Steel
Austenitic stainless steel has good weldability. However, if the welding materials or welding processes are incorrect, the following defects may occur:
01. Poor weld formation
● Causes of poor weld formation:
When welding austenitic stainless steel, due to the high content of alloy elements in the weld, the molten pool has poor fluidity, which easily leads to poor formation of the weld surface.
Mainly manifested as the deterioration of the formation at the back of the root weld bead and the roughness of the surface of the overlay weld bead. The influence of poor weld formation on the weld performance is not obvious at normal temperatures or high-temperature conditions, but in low-temperature conditions, the stress concentration caused by poor formation of the weld has an impact on the low-temperature performance of the weld that is no less than the impact on the internal quality of the weld.
●Preventive measures:
For the problems of poor weld formation and intergranular corrosion in the welding heat affected zone, these can be addressed through the welding process.
