What is BA grade stainless steel pipe What is the origin of its name
What is BA grade stainless steel welded pipe?
BA grade stainless steel welded pipe is a high-precision stainless steel welded pipe that has undergone bright annealing treatment. Its core feature is that the inner and outer surfaces have extremely high smoothness (usually surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.4 μm), uniform passivation film (Cr₂O₃ content ≥ 12%), and no residual contaminants such as oxide scale, oil stains, or particles.
Compared with ordinary stainless steel welding pipes, BA grade products are processed through a bright annealing process under the protection of inert gases (such as a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen), avoiding surface oxidation during the traditional annealing process. At the same time, they eliminate welding stress, optimize crystal structure, and possess excellent corrosion resistance (salt spray test ≥ 500 hours), cleanliness (compliant with ISO 15792-2 cleanliness standards), and mechanical properties (tensile strength ≥ 520 MPa). They are suitable for scenarios with strict requirements for medium purity, surface quality.
The origin of the "BA" grade name
"BA" is the abbreviation of "Bright Annealing" (Brightening Retention). This naming is directly derived from its core process - through annealing treatment in an inert gas atmosphere, stainless steel pipes are relieved of welding stresses, softened in material, while maintaining a bright and oxide-free surface. Therefore, it is called "BA grade".
This process differs from the traditional "black annealing" (without protective gas, resulting in an oxide layer on the surface). It is a hallmark technology for the surface treatment of high-end stainless steel pipes. The "BA grade" has become the common classification term within the industry for stainless steel products that have undergone bright annealing and have reached a high level of cleanliness and brightness standards on the surface.
