What are the differences in wear resistance between 2205 duplex stainless steel pipes and 316L
2205 duplex stainless steel pipes and 316L stainless steel pipes have the following differences in terms of wear resistance:
Microstructure and alloy composition
2205 duplex stainless steel tube: Contains approximately 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 0.18% nitrogen, etc. Chromium and molybdenum enhance corrosion resistance while also helping to improve wear resistance. Nitrogen can increase strength and hardness, thereby enhancing wear resistance. Its unique ferritic and austenitic duplex structure enables the material to possess the advantages of both, with more complex dislocation movement and stronger resistance to wear.
316L stainless steel pipe: It belongs to austenitic stainless steel, containing 10%-14% nickel and 2%-3% molybdenum. The nickel makes the material have good toughness and ductility, and the molybdenum can enhance corrosion resistance. However, the overall alloy composition is not as targeted as 2205 duplex stainless steel in improving wear resistance.
Hardness performance
2205 duplex stainless steel pipe: The hardness is usually higher than that of 316L stainless steel pipe. Its tensile strength can reach 680-800 MPa, yield strength can reach 475-630 MPa, and hardness can reach HB170-250. It has inherent advantages in wear resistance, and can better resist deformation and material loss during the friction process.
316L stainless steel pipe: The hardness is relatively low, usually around HB187 or HV200. It is more prone to wear under high friction frequency and high load conditions.
Wear resistance performance under different conditions
Medium containing particles transportation condition
2205 duplex stainless steel pipe: Performs better when transporting fluids containing solid particles. Its high strength and hardness enable it to better resist the scouring and impact of particles. In material transportation in industries such as mining and construction, the wear rate is relatively slow, maintaining good surface integrity and wall thickness.
316L stainless steel pipe: Under the same conditions, due to its relatively lower hardness and strength, the erosion and impact of particles on the inner wall are more likely to cause surface wear. Over time, the wall thickness may become thinner more significantly.
Friction sliding operation condition
2205 duplex stainless steel tube: With its high hardness and strength, it can better resist surface wear and scratches in relative motion friction sliding applications, such as mechanical seals and shaft sleeves, thereby reducing the problems of accuracy decline and sealing performance deterioration caused by wear.
316L stainless steel pipe: If there is no special surface treatment or it is not paired with an appropriate compatible material, during the long-term friction and sliding process, the surface is more likely to suffer from wear, scratches, and other phenomena, which will affect the performance of the equipment.
Corrosion and wear conditions
2205 duplex stainless steel pipe: High chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content, better corrosion resistance in corrosive environments, and can effectively resist corrosion wear. In environments with strong corrosivity such as marine engineering and chemical industry, its wear resistance decreases to a lesser extent.
316L stainless steel pipe: Although it has good corrosion resistance, in a highly corrosive environment, especially in the presence of corrosive media such as chloride ions, compared to 2205 duplex stainless steel, it is more prone to corrosion, thereby accelerating the wear process and reducing the wear resistance.
