The physical properties of duplex stainless steel

The physical properties of duplex stainless steel lie between austenitic stainless steel and ferritic stainless steel, but are closer to ferritic stainless steel and carbon steel. This type of stainless steel combines the high strength and chloride stress corrosion resistance of ferritic stainless steel, as well as the excellent toughness and weldability of austenitic stainless steel. The corrosion resistance, high strength, and ease of manufacturing and processing of duplex stainless steel make it a versatile material, widely used in various industrial fields.

The physical properties of duplex stainless steel include:

1. Corrosion Resistance: The corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steel is related to its chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and nitrogen contents. It has excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, and can be comparable to 316 stainless steel, and even outperform certain types of seawater-resistant stainless steels such as 6% Mo austenitic stainless steel in some cases.

2. High Strength: The duplex stainless steel has a significantly higher yield strength, being more than twice that of the standard austenitic stainless steel without nitrogen addition. This enables designers to reduce the wall thickness in applications and save materials.

3. Excellent toughness and ductility: Although the toughness and ductility of duplex stainless steel are not as good as those of austenitic stainless steel, it still maintains excellent toughness at very low temperatures, which is superior to ferritic stainless steel and carbon steel.

4. Easy to manufacture and process: The physical properties of duplex stainless steel make it relatively easy to process and weld, meeting the requirements of various industrial applications.

5. Anisotropy: The mechanical properties of forged duplex stainless steel are highly anisotropic, meaning that the properties vary depending on the direction of the test sample. This anisotropy is caused by elongated grains and the crystal texture generated by hot rolling or cold rolling.

In conclusion, duplex stainless steel, with its unique physical properties, plays a significant role in the industrial field. It can meet the requirements of high strength, has excellent toughness and corrosion resistance, and is also easy to process and weld. It is a versatile material.
