How many types of duplex stainless steel are there
Duplex stainless steel is mainly classified into four types: low alloy type, medium alloy type, high alloy type and super duplex stainless steel type.
Low-alloy type duplex stainless steel: The alloying elements of this type of steel are mainly chromium and nickel, with relatively low contents, and the pitting resistance equivalent index (PRE) is no greater than 25. For example, the cold-rolled steel sheet material 0Cr21Ni5Ti in China belongs to this category.
Medium alloy type duplex stainless steel: Compared with low alloy type, medium alloy type duplex stainless steel adds molybdenum or copper, and the pitting resistance equivalent index (PRE) is between 25 and 35. For example, duplex stainless steel rolled material 00Cr18Ni5Mo3Si2 belongs to this category.
High-alloy duplex stainless steel: This type of steel contains a relatively high amount of chromium, nickel, as well as alloying elements such as molybdenum and copper, with a pitting resistance equivalent index (PRE) ranging from 35 to 40. For instance, 0Cr25Ni6Mo3CuN, which has been widely used in China, falls into this category.
Super duplex stainless steel: This type of steel, in addition to containing a relatively high amount of alloying elements such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen, some also incorporate tungsten and copper. The pitting resistance equivalent index (PRE) is greater than 40. For instance, 00Cr25Ni7Mo3.5WCuN, which has been adopted in some industries in China, belongs to this category.
This classification of duplex stainless steel is based on the differences in their alloy composition and corrosion resistance. Each type of duplex stainless steel has its specific application fields, ranging from general industrial applications to usage in extreme environmental conditions, meeting the demands of various industries.
