What are the main types of corrosion for stainless steel pipes

The main types of corrosion for stainless steel pipes include:

1. Pitting corrosion: Localized corrosion, often occurring in water solutions containing chlorine, bromine, iodine, etc., forming small holes and causing rapid corrosion.

2. Intergranular corrosion: Commonly occurs in acidic media such as medium-concentration sulfuric acid, high-concentration nitric acid, and organic acids. The grain boundaries are subject to accelerated corrosion due to chromium depletion at the boundaries.

3. Stress corrosion: Corrosion in a dendritic pattern along the thickness of the equipment, related to tensile stress generated during the manufacturing process of the pipe material.

4. Crevice corrosion: Due to crevices within stainless steel pipes, such as at riveted joints or dead corners in the pipe, chloride ion concentration increases, accelerating corrosion.

The causes and effects of corrosion types

The causes and effects of these types of corrosion are as follows:

1. Pitting corrosion: In media containing chloride ions, the passive layer is prone to damage, forming small holes or pits, which leads to intensified local corrosion.

2. Intergranular corrosion: During manufacturing and welding processes, if the heating temperature and rate are within the sensitization temperature range, chromium carbide forms, reducing chromium content at the grain boundaries and creating chromium-depleted zones, thereby decreasing corrosion resistance.

3. Stress corrosion: Under specific medium conditions, tensile stress causes stainless steel pipes to crack, seriously affecting their safety and service life.

4. Crevice corrosion: Due to the lack of fluid flow in crevices, chloride ions concentrate, accelerating corrosion and intensifying local corrosion.
