The difference between 304L stainless steel and 304 stainless steel
They are two common types of stainless steel materials, and the main differences lie in the following aspects:
Chemical composition: The chemical compositions of 304 stainless steel and 304L stainless steel are basically the same. Both contain 18% chromium (Cr) and 8% nickel (Ni), but the carbon (C) content of 304L stainless steel is relatively lower, usually below 0.03%, while the carbon content of 304 stainless steel is typically around 0.08%. The lower carbon content makes 304L stainless steel more suitable for welding and reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion during welding.
Corrosion resistance: Due to its low carbon content, 304L stainless steel exhibits better intergranular corrosion resistance after welding. Therefore, in certain corrosive environments, 304L stainless steel is more resistant to corrosion compared to 304 stainless steel.
Physical properties: The physical properties of 304 stainless steel and 304L stainless steel are basically the same, including yield strength, tensile strength, hardness, etc.
Application fields: Due to the superior welding performance and intergranular corrosion resistance of 304L stainless steel, it is typically used in applications where high welding performance is required and where exposure to corrosive media is possible, such as food processing equipment, chemical equipment, and pharmaceutical equipment; while 304 stainless steel is used in some general applications, such as architectural decoration, automotive parts, and household items.
