What are the differences between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel

In our daily life, many household items are made of stainless steel. And there are various types of stainless steel. So, what are the differences between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel?

1. What are the differences between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel?

1. Chemical composition: 304 does not contain molybdenum, while 316 does.

2. Corrosion resistance: 304 contains only 9% nickel, while 316 contains 12%. Therefore, 304 has poorer corrosion resistance and other aspects.

3. Performance: 304 has better corrosion resistance, acid resistance, and alkali resistance, etc. While 316, due to the addition of molybdenum, has better resistance to chloride corrosion and heat resistance.

4. Application scope: 304 is widely used in making pots, pans, etc., while 316 is widely used in the food industry, medical industry, watch industry, etc.

5. Price: Since 316 is of food grade and has better corrosion resistance, its price will be higher than that of 304.

II. How to distinguish between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel tableware

1. When observing 304 and 316 stainless steel with the naked eye, it is generally impossible to tell the difference. Therefore, many merchants, for their own benefit, sell 304 stainless steel as 316. However, the price difference between the two is quite significant. Since 316 is of food-grade quality and has better corrosion resistance, the price of 316 is usually higher than that of 304. If you spend money on 316 but end up getting 304 stainless steel tableware, it means you have wasted your money.

2. Due to the different chemical components added in 304 and 316, when distinguishing between the two, professional stainless steel solution can also be used for identification. After dripping the solution on the stainless steel, the surface of 304 material usually shows a normal reddish tint, while the surface of 316 material will appear black.
